Todd Cordell: Devils suffer another setback, blanked by stingy Senators

Last night made me so mad for a variety of reasons. I'll lay off of the JJ criticism because I know everyone will say he's been rejuvenated since playing with Zacha and Noesen, but it's still the soft, never-win-a-battle-in the corner, get pushed around the ice JJ to me.

The thing that killed me last night was Hynes. Time and time again this team gets down and they do absolutely nothing to adjust. They wait way too long to start having the D pinch, he won't stack up lines, he won't try anything new. He just keeps beating his head against the wall time and time again. Then the camera goes to him and there he is, straight-faced as always. Sometimes I get the feeling the mindset is, "we're going to play our game, if it's not good enough to win...oh well." It drives me nuts. That was a huge game last night and there was ZERO urgency on that bench.

oh, even though it was my team that won, I can fully admit that was boring hockey.

I think the difference is that the devils did it basically every game for 15 years, it wasn't just a game here or there.

There was one play from Cammy that really caught my eye. It was in the third period and he had the puck in the back corner in the offensive zone. Instead of throwing it down low or putting it in a position to be deflected, he took a wild slap shot that was stopped well before it reached the net, creating numbers the other way. Looked desperate, not smart like we're used to.

In 2000 the Devils held the Maple Leafs to six shots in a playoff game... You can bet the Toronto Fans certainly didn't think that was fun hockey. For me, it was fun...

no doubt, if you're on the winning side you're always going to enjoy it. yes, I admit that game last night was not exciting but I enjoyed every second of it.

I can definitely understand why fans of the teams on the losing side would get frustrated and criticize it though, and you guys won A LOT, for a LONG ASS TIME playing like that............so it's understandable that a lot of fans would get frustrated and call it boring.

Very true. I don't necessarily find it boring as much as I find it frustrating. Which, as you stated, is what we did to others for a long time. I actually appreciate the chess-like aspect of a good defensive game.

Kalinin on waivers! Guess this opens up more playing time for Blender. Unfortunate, because I liked Zubrus 2.0. Big body forward that's strong on the puck.

I assume he gets claimed. Teams like big depth forwards

I just always thought you did what you had to do to win games..cause that's the point of playing the game, is to win.

As long as this spot is for Q, Coleman or Blender and not DSP

Probably more Q or Coleman since both are centers. Right?

Shero should of traded Cam at the 2015 draft after he scored 27 goals. We'd be lucky to get a 2nd for him now.

Talk about Monday Morning Quarterback comments. If he knew then what he knows now he might of. But that's not how it works...

Never know. Could still trade Cam, Moore/Quincey and a pick for a top 4 D to a team that's in a tough spot in the expansion draft.

Quarterbacking? At the time he was 33 and had a big history with injuries. Everyone's blind if they didn't see this coming. I've said for years that they should trade him. He should be benched, but because he makes 5 million he won't be and his play will continue to be complete garbage.

Coming off the season he had, if the Devils, a team strapped for offense, moved him the fan base would have been livid. I get your point about age and injuries, but the majority of fans would have viewed it as an offensively challenged trading one of the few guys that can actually produce points. It wouldn't have went over well.

Let's say Fowler for example, Anaheim may lose an important forward already, let alone take on a 34 year old at the expansion draft. And I don't see a lot of teams that are as deep as Anaheim on D. Trouba would be the guy I target, but he would cost too much for this team to give up.

And yet he missed half the year with injuries anyway because he was injury prone and getting older.

Lol, again, if Shero knew then what he knows now then perhaps things would have gone differently.
